Michelle V. Moncrieffe is a lecturer, and transdisciplinary researcher. As well as being a certified health education specialist (CHES), Michelle is a freelance health journalist. Over two decades, her work has been published in Baltimore Magazine, Johns Hopkins Health Review and local newspapers across the U.S. Michelle earned her MA in Journalism (with a focus on health communication) from the University of Iowa. Thereafter, she was a research associate for a global health project at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Michelle’s first teaching experience was at the Tanzania School of Journalism, in Dar es Salaam. Although Michelle has not lived in her hometown for many years, she still describes herself as a Londoner.
Eileen Harrington is the Assistant Director and Health & Life Sciences Librarian at the Priddy Library at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, MD. Previously, she oversaw the Naturalist Center at the California Academy of Sciences. Eileen has been a formal and informal educator both in the United States and in Latin America. She earned a master's in environmental studies from York University (Canada) and a master's in library and information studies from the UW-Madison. Her research interests include health humanities, libraries and health information, public engagement with science, and environmental education.
Dr. E. Angeles Martínez Mier is a tenured professor and chair of the Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health at the IU School of Dentistry. Her research focuses on dental caries and enamel fluorosis prevention, specifically on fluorides, and is often conducted in partnership with communities. She obtained her DDS degree at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in 1989, followed by an MSD in preventive dentistry in 1994 and a Ph.D. in dental sciences in 2000, both from Indiana University. Martinez Mier’s research has been funded by the NIH, HRSA and CDC, as well as multiple foundations and industry.
Michelle McQuistan, DDS, MS, is an Associate Professor of Preventive and Community Dentistry and the Officer for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. She received her DDS and MS in Dental Public Health from the University of Iowa and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate program at the University of Florida-Jacksonville Clinic. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and is past President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. Dr. McQuistan’s research focuses on access to care with an emphasis in 2 main areas: oral health literacy, and dental students’ and dentists’ willingness to treat underserved populations.
Laura Moorhead is an associate professor at San Francisco State University’s Journalism Department and a researcher with the ScholCommLab at Simon Fraser University. A former editor at PBS/Frontline World and Wired, she explores tensions between journalistic practices and ideals. She considers what narratives are elevated by journalists and how they report societal issues such as access to health information and scientific research. She is currently leading a Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) grant. Laura also researches access to knowledge and is a council member of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Dr. Anubhuti Shukla is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). She also serves as the Director for the Community Based Dental Education Program at IUSD. She graduated from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2018 and is trained to treat medically complex and special needs patients with a public health lens. She has a broad background in a variety of community dentistry topics with special focus on oral health policies, including oral health workforce capacity and access to quality services in underserved settings. The scope of her work has covered some very important and timely issues in the field of dentistry: oral health access issues, Opioid epidemic, evidence-based dentistry focusing on prevention, health services research, systemic–oral health connection with a strong focus on community studies, interventions, and policies.
Sheryl L. Syme, RDH, MS is Associate Professor in the Division of Periodontics, Department of Advanced Oral Sciences and Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. She served for many years as Dental Hygiene Program Director, Director of the BS Degree Completion Program, as well as Graduate Program Director and founder of the Dual Degree BS/MS Clinical Dental Hygiene Leader Track at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Sheryl obtained her B.S. degree from the UMSOD and her M.S. degree from the UMB Graduate School. Sheryl received prior grant support for developing the UMB CURE Scholars Oral Health Promotion and Sealant Program for adolescents aimed to increase underrepresented minorities in biomedical sciences and to serve as a foundation for oral health improvement in West Baltimore’s most underserved schools.
Siril Stephen is a pre-dental student at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in Biochemistry. As the intern for the NAME Project, Siril hopes to help raise awareness to the inequities in access to dental care. He has experience working in dental offices, from front desk to dental assisting, and he understands the concerns and perspectives of patients who may have to decline dental work due to costs. As an aspiring dentist, he hopes to change the fears and stereotypes associated with going to the dentist to better improve public oral health. Through this project, Siril strives to learn and help the community to mold the future practitioner he strives to be.
