Each research site hosted oral health fairs at public libraries, adapting their delivery to the resources available and needs of each community. A total of about 1100 community members attended the oral health fairs across all of the sites. All of them provided opportunities for experiential learning for dental and dental hygiene students, pre-health undergraduates and journalism students. They also brought together clinicians and community members lacking access to oral health care in a safe, neutral environment.
Hosting the fairs at public libraries enabled easier access for participants, and many appreciated the chance to share their concerns and access information on where to receive the low-cost care they needed. Others had not been to a dentist in a while but were happy to find they had no issues. For many of the participants at all sites, English was not their first language (Spanish and Chinese being the most common) so having translators proved invaluable. Below are photos from the health fairs and a map of the locations where they were held, along with more details about the oral health fairs.
