Bio: Sanshiroh Ogawa (小川 三四郎) is an applied linguist currently pursuing a PhD degree in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) under the supervision of Dr. Kira Gor and Dr. Bronson Hui at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). Sanshiroh is also pursuing a post-baccalaureate certificate in Quantitative Methodology: Measurement and Statistics at UMD with Dr. Hong Jiao as his advisor. Sanshiroh's current research interests include second language speech perception (i.e., how second language learners perceive speech sounds in their target language), accented speech (i.e., how speech with an accent is perceived by listeners), incorporation of AI-based synthetic speech in SLA (i.e., can AI-generated synthetic speech replace natural speech?) and psychometrics, particularly differential item functioning (i.e., whether test items function the same way across different groups of test takers).
Sanshiroh has experience teaching Japanese at Syracuse University and the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as the Japan-America Society of Washington DC and Japan Society in New York. In addition to teaching Japanese, Sanshiroh has taught English as a Second Language at Washington English Center, managed the English and Japanese Language Schools at the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, and worked as an administrator at the Japanese language school in Tokyo operated by EF Education First.
Sanshiroh holds a BA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Applied Linguistics from Waseda University and an MA in Linguistics with a dual concentration in Language Acquisition and Language Teaching from Syracuse University, where he also obtained a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Language Teaching: TESOL/TLOTE.
