Event Logistics (2/13/2024, AAB Event, Heartmelt Delights)
(#chocolateart)
For my first TRYathlon of the new semester, I went to the AAB event called "Heartmelt Delights", where I went to make heart-shaped chocolates and eat pizza for Valentine's Day. I created a group of four with three other people I had never talked to before. First, we grabbed a chocolate mold and some white and milk chocolate melts. We melted the chocolate in a plastic cup in a microwave in the Bel Air Hall lounge. It was quite hectic in the lounge with all groups competing to use the microwave but luckily we got one quickly and efficiently melted our chocolate- without burning a hole in the plastic cup as some groups did. We poured the melted white and milk chocolate into the mold and marbled them together. Our finishing touches were some heart sprinkles on top to make sure they were properly in the Valentine's Day Spirit and then finished by putting them into the freezer to harden. They looked very pretty but I did not end up trying one because chocolate that has been microwaved in plastic cups sounds a little bit toxic to ingest. Overall, I enjoyed this TRYathlon a lot. I made some new friends and had a lot of fun making our chocolates. The activity didn't necessarily relate to my workshop or anything I have learned in my major but it was a very enjoyable way to make some art!
Event Logistics (3/12/2024, CCC, Friendship Bracelet Making)
(#braceletmaking, #crafts)
For my second Arts Scholars TRYathlon I decided to go to an event where we made friendship bracelets. I went to the event right after my Experimental Typography workshop. It was nice because I got to hang out with the other people in my workshop (and other people in Arts Scholars that I've never met before) and I was able to talk with them and get to know them more while making bracelets. My favorite colors are pink and orange so I decided only to use pink and orange beads. I also added two clay beads that looked like fruits, one grapefruit and one strawberry. Considering the recent onset of warmer weather, these bead choices seemed even more fitting, as they are in the warm color group and remind me of bright popsicles or the beautiful summer sunsets that I always watch when I am home. Reflecting on my experiences in the Experimental Typography workshop, we talk about the graphic design of certain font choices and how those can affect how the words are interpreted. I believe color is one of the components that help in how a word is visually represented which reminds me of the process in which I made bead color choices. In addition to the colors, the act of making bracelets reminds me of summer camps that I used to go to and do similar activities.
Event Logistics (3/28/2024, AAB Event, Trinkets and S'mores)
(#egghunt)
For my 3rd and final arts scholars TRYathlon of my freshman year I decided to attend the Trinkets and S'mores Arts Advisory Board event. My workshop leader Soeun told our group about this event so I knew I had to go. It was a rainy day but cleared up for the event which was nice. When I got there, we made a s'more on the grills outside of Chestertown Hall. This was exciting because I've never seen the grills used. I grill a lot at my house so it was nice to do something that felt homey even though we were in College Park. The same thing applied to the egg hunt, which was fun to do with the people in Arts Scholars and I think we all appreciated being able to do this activity that reminded most of us of our childhoods while we were at school. It was a nice break from all the busyness and stress of my schoolwork. Some people found multiple eggs, I ended up finding one but I gave it to someone else who did not find any. Overall, this event was not directly related to any form of art, although you could stretch that making s'mores is a craft of some sort. It was very fun though, and it was especially nice to have something lighthearted to do and have more opportunities to make friends with other art scholars.
