Reanimating fashion
Abstract
This project combats fashion waste by taking fabric that people would throw away and repurposing it to assemble a new outfit. It inspires personal agency in your wardrobe and encourages sustainable fashion measures like clothing repairs and DIY garments, making the intimidating concept of self-made clothing more approachable to people who haven’t done it before. Fast fashion continues to generate huge waste, partially because the second-hand fashion industry still throws out huge quantities of fast fashion clothing. I will take clothing that would be thrown out (even if donated) and use that fabric to make a distinct new outfit. Small fabric scraps are often considered unusable, because they aren’t large enough to use as whole pieces, and “patchwork” clothing aesthetics tend to be abrupt and unsuitable to regular wardrobes. My pieces will demonstrate that patches can be unobtrusive or visually cohesive with the rest of the clothing. This project will make my audience reconsider what to do with clothing that they no longer want, and what makes fabric “trash” worth keeping. It will help them recognize what makes good, usable material, and how to use it in an easy and attractive way, with minimal costs.
