9/12/2025 - Immersive Media Design New Works Incubator Showcase
#visualart, #immersive, #technology, #games, #vr
I was extremely happy that I decided to visit this event from the NextNOW fest. I thought that every project found in the showcase was so interesting. In particular, I visited one project that was based off of identifying the subject through using a lamp and a walking stick. You could change the scenes based off of touching candles. This project as well as the other projects were so intriguing because it really shows how art can be connected with technology and used in so many different ways. I wondered how immersive media design could be used for medicine. Having a project similar to the topography project where it could simulate lines moving towards where you are touching it could be so interesting because perhaps you could pair it with biology to simulate how, for example, blood cells and other organelles flow towards an injury and how it would work. Or, simlar to the walking project, it shows the degradation of a place over time due to different human impacts (deforestation, pollution, etc.).
10/20/2025 - Clay Creations with Studio A
#ceramics, #studioA, #pinchcup, #needlework
This was an extremely fun maker mixer that really fulfilled the child in me that has been dying to work with clay. Clay is just so fun because not only is it artistic and relaxing yet challenging, but it's so cool to think about the chemical processes behind firing it in the kiln and the colors you can get from different glazes. Not only this, but the intricacies included with the carving and how every piece will be different will always make me fond of clay. I hope that in the future I can use clay to express something related to my degree, such as making a clay person starting from the bones to the muscles to the skin (which I know many art majors must do). Recently, I saw the work of Sarah Ritchie, an artist who combines her passion for entomology with ceramics as she uses slip similar to icing and "ices" her ceramic works with beautiful insects. This not only opened my world to a whole new technique in ceramics, but it really shows how there's something new you can explore in the world of pottery and how you can really connect it to anything. For my piece I hoped to create something not only cute that reflects my love for nature through the carvings but something that'll be useful to me currently. I'm attempting to create my own green onion garden, in which this pinch cup will be the holder of. Overall, pottery is a world that is continuing to grow and develop and I wonder how, with advancements in technology as well, different techniques will bloom.
10/25-10/26 - Pikmin Hat + other accessories from Michael's inspired by RIO, Rockville flea market
#fleamarket, #pikmin, #sewing, #accessories
I decided I wanted to challenge myself with a "choose your own art-venture" by exploring a medium I've never touched. What inspired me was when I went to the flea/craft market in Rio on 10/25 and seeing just how many people create their own clothes, jewelry, and accessories. I thought about all the other flea markets as well, such as the one in Georgetown and in UMD itself at Tawes every Wednesday. It had me thinking about just how creative and resourceful people can be when budgets are tight and certain items may not be available or feasible. When faced with uncertainty, people create, leading to different fashions and styles across cultures and class. With this, it led to me attempting to make my own clothes and accessories. I was inspired by the game Pikmin, which has these little characters that follow you around and help you! I hand sewed all the parts (minus the headband of course) and had to get real creative with how to attach each part and eventually the final product to the headband since I was very low on supplies. Despite the lack of resources, I think it turned out a lot better than I expected! I think this will lead me to creating more of my own accessories and hopefully my own clothes in the future using thrifted or unused clothing, leading to a more sustainable future.
