9/6/2024 - Submergence by Squidsoup & An Evening With Elizabeth Gillies at the Clarice Arts Center

For the Arts TRYathlon, I decided to visit the "Submergence by Squidsoup" event and "An Evening With Elizabeth Gillies" event. At first I was going to attend the mini arcade, but when arriving I was taken back by how amazing the lights were. Then, while looking around (we visited the costume shop as well although not for long), we ended up finding ourselves in the line for Elizabeth Gillies.
One thing I wondered was how exactly the evening with Elizabeth Gillies counted as art. Of course, I understand how acting is definitely an art due to how much intent and performance goes into it, but I wondered exactly how the interview counted as art. I suppose it could count as a performance due to the roles of the interviewer and the interviewee, and the performance of speech and delivery from the interviewee could be connected to the arts of performing such as reciting a poem or being a part of a play. Yet looking at the surface value and the event as a whole, I was just initially surprised that this counted towards the NextNOW festival. In addition, I was very surprised as to how dedicated all the fans surrounding me and my friends were to Elizabeth Gillies. Perhaps it was simply because I've never been really into celebrities, or that we just found ourselves attending this event, but the amount of cheering and screaming for her blew me out of the water.
What I was very impressed by was the Submergence by Squidsoup. I was expecting the lights, yet what astounded me was how immersive it was with the size of the event, the smoke that surrounded you, and the music that accompanied the whole experience (although I'm not sure it was tied to the event). I think the way they implemented every element included and tied them all together to create a fluid experience created a beautiful artistic experience. With each element, they targeted almost every sense which led to an extremely immersive experience. I think many people tend to forget that even curation of an event can count as art, which this event perfectly displayed.
9/19/2024 - Stenciling Stickers @ Bel Air Lounge w/ TA Chioma
#stickers #homemade #selfmade
I decided to visit the sticker event with TA Chioma. I think it was really fun because I had never made homemade stickers before and it was surprising to me that it was such an easy process. I decided to draw Mabel from Gravity Falls as a gift for my sister. I think I learned not only how to use my skills as a gift for others but also that things can be simpler than they seem at first glance. In the end we can always find our own way to rework seemingly complicated processes to fit our situation.
10/24/2024 - Magic with Mehndi w/ TA Nivi
#personalizedtotebag #stenciling #markers #tote
This was a really fun experience that I brought my friend to. I expected something much different, but using the stencils was a great idea especially for those who aren't good at freehanding. It was really fun to try and organize the stencils into a design that would complement the bag, and the stencils themselves were very pretty. I also liked trying to make the designs cohesive in the way that certain designs had specific colors, although I ended up deviating from that in the center so that the middle flowers would stand out. Overall, I really liked this event because not only did it show that using stencils is a valid form of art, but constructing and organizing the design itself onto the bag is an art.
