The fellows who participate in NOI+F are busy. They are also highly skilled at what they do. Our goal is never to suggest that they need to do anything differently than they already are, but rather, offer another set of tools they can add to their toolkits -- in a way that doesn't add even more to their plates. By working with already-formed chamber music groups, being strategic about scheduling workshops, and finding proximate spaces to work in, we seek to lower the barriers to experimenting with innovation at the Festival.
So, we try to meet NOI fellows where they are... figuratively and literally!
From collaborating with fellows to design their performance for Chamber 2.0 performances to facilitating workshops about innovation tools and mindsets, the Studio engages with fellows throughout the entirety of the festival.
The Studio tries to bring in experiences that will help musicians approach their work from different angles while also sharing insights from their respective disciplines (such as dance, improv, technology, and more!)
Leading up to Chamber 2.0, the Studio meets regularly with the chamber groups through a series of workshops. In these workshops, we dive deeper into the stories of each group's piece, what the musicians want to experiment with, and identify what the Innovation Studio team can provide to help bring those ideas to life!
From bringing brainstorming sessions to the band room, or setting up camp in front of the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C, the Innovation Studio team will literally meet fellows where they are! This sparks moments of spontaneous collaboration, energizes brainstorming sessions, and allows for the teams to gather inspiration from new and unexpected spaces!
