Cantata (2/1, bethel church, cantata)
#music
This experience was very eye-opening. The cantata was hosted at bethel church, and it was open to everyone to come. We went there earlier because there were seat limits, and I am so glad I was able to attend. The cantata enlisted multiple performances and pieces. There was an orchestra and a choir, along with a few people from a band. While in attendance, I noticed that the whole location was completely booked, with people coming in and standing to watch the cantata that was hours in length. The experience taught me how much joy and happiness music could be spread to each person listening. It felt as if we were all one family and one community. Especially after the cantata ended, those who did not previously know me turned around to talk about the performance and how much they enjoyed it. I was taught that music can make friendships and connections through my conversations after the cantata. I am excited to apply what I have learned and implement it in art scholars. If we have events and class time involving music, I would love to teach others the same things I have learned. In the same way, I would spread the appreciation of music and the companionships that can come out of it.
Podcast (3/15, LeVar Burton Reads, "The November Story" by Rebecca Makkai)
#literature
"The November Story" was about Rebecca Makkai herself, who is a reality TV producer who creates love stories for entertainment. She talked about how she is able to edit certain scenes so that the show is more interesting, and she also said that she even controlled some of the drama that went on. She then went on to say that it is not the case in her personal life. Her podcast made me realize that there are many fake connections in the world, along with real ones in media. It also made me make a connection with the arts scholars' colloquium and how we discussed the ways in which media shapes how we perceive and think about different things in life. I also connected with the various ways stories and podcasts can influence public opinion through my major. Policymakers frame problems in ways that change the way society understands them, which is similar to how the reality TV producer edited her scenes to influence how the audience felt while watching the reality TV show. It is interesting how she made the connection of how her TV reality skills don't help her with her personal love life. It made me realize how everything can be nearly perfected in reality TV shows, but life is never going to go as planned. Overall, this podcast got me to think about how stories and podcasts can influence how people think about things.
Peer Mentor Event (3/25, zoom, peer mentor zoom hangout)
#presentation #literature
I joined the peer mentor Zoom hangout, and this was a good experience for me because I was able to connect with my arts scholars community. I was able to freely ask any general art scholars-related questions, and talk about the final presentation project process for Arts Fest, and my completed artworks. Since my peer mentors had pretty similar interests as me and had more experience, I was able to receive good advice from them. I walked away from this event and learned how presentation abilities are very important not only in academics but also in art. When I talked about the final presentation for Arts Fest with my peer mentors, it made me think about how sharing artwork can involve a lot of effort, especially if we want to convey it in an engaging way. I remember we learned about how art is about how we can communicate with others rather than just creating something in art scholars. I also put in #literature, because I think that storytelling has a lot of influence. When it comes to presenting, it is a skill that someone can have, which can make the difference between how people react and respond to the message that is trying to be conveyed. It is similar in a way, to art and literature because storytelling influences others (connecting a little bit back from the previous tryathlon). Through the Zoom meeting, I was able to notice how important it is to receive support and be within a community that cares for one another. Through this, I was also able to learn a lot more about what it means to be an arts scholar.
