UMD’s IT Standard on Institutional Email requires that UMD personnel conducting university business must use an approved email system and specifies that UMD Email (the DIT-managed UMD Gmail system) is the official email system for university business. Several migrations are planned to help UMD community members move from department-managed email systems to UMD Email.
UMD Email accounts also provide access to other Google services, including Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Search, Keep, and Hangouts. Additionally, there are significant differences in the agreement language and the data collected between a typical consumer Gmail and the UMD G Suite for Education accounts.
To provide several scheduling options options for departments moving as well as to ensure the quickest data migration possible, moves to UMD's G Suite will take place in sets, or Cohorts.
