For my own adventure, I decided to go to an art gallery. It was the Kulture Gallery located in Waldorf, Maryland. This experience simply included walking around and viewing the different pieces of art. Each work of art had a different story relating to the black culture. There were various different types of art including paintings and sculptures. I really enjoyed viewing the sculptures as they were presented well. While walking around the gallery, I was able to find a piece of art that really stood out to me. This piece was a painting titled “The Key.” It is a painting with a young black girl holding books with the spine having the words knowledge, wealth, and power. The artist, Jerry Lynn, typically created art that involves taking black figures from the past and present and immortalizing them on a canvas. The piece stood out to me as the colors were extremely vibrant and the overall message was outstanding. Another piece that stood out to me was titled “Joy” by Warren Hynsen. It is a painting with different mediums of a young child with a pure smile. The artist was mistaken for a murder at the age of 17 and served 28 years in prison. Afterwards, he decided to create art to share his story with the world. This piece stood out to me as the colors are also vibrant and the story is shown with the use of it. Overall, my experience at Kulture Gallery was amazing. I learned a lot from the artists' backgrounds and their art itself. I truly enjoyed each piece of art that I saw and would visit again. A concept that I strengthened from this activity was analyzing. I was able to deepen my understanding of each artwork that I viewed by slow looking and thoroughly analyzing. This experience allowed me to connect with the culture and understand the different backgrounds of artists and their push to create art.

For my second personal adventure, I decided to go to a gallery located in Adele H. Stamp Student Union. It was titled Open Ended Narratives created by the artist Schroeder Cherry. This is a solo exhibition indulging in multiple mediums of art combined into one. The mixed mediums included painting on wood and the use of physical objects such as keys and bottle caps. In addition to my first personal adventure, this gallery also simply included walking around and viewing the different pieces of art. There was one interactive piece titled “Adam and Eve Enter the Garden.” It was the first piece of work when entering the gallery. It is a closed wooden piece that is able to open. Inside are two black figures, one male and one female. Connecting to the title, they represent Adam and Eve as there was also greenery all around the canvas. Further on throughout the gallery, there were more pieces of art relating to individuals of the future. For example, the artist had a future voters series within the gallery showing that these young individuals will be indulging in political expression. They all had some sort of sign language on them as well as playing cards and a key. The key is symbolic as it may represent the key to success or strong knowledge that is coming with these individuals. Overall, this experience was very enjoyable and I was able to learn a lot from what I’ve seen and put my own interpretations towards the pieces of art. A concept that I strengthened was the ability to allow myself to think creatively and come up with different possible meanings. This experience overall allowed me to strengthen my ability to use the concept of slow looking to understand art.

For my final tryathlon, I was able to do a craft and chat in the Bel Air lounge. This was paper clip jewelry making. This experience indulged in using paper clips and beads to make any kind of jewelry. I decided to make a bracelet and a ring. At first I started unraveling the paper clips so they can be straight and link them together. However, I realized that this didn’t work so I ended up leaving the rest of them in their original state and linking them together. While linking them together, I added green beads and charms to give it a pleasing appeal. I then twisted the straightened paper clips together and attached them to my other linked paper clips. With the other straightened paper clips, I made a ring with it so it doesn’t go to waste. Overall, my experience making jewelry with paper clips was amazing. I learned how to create art with an item that I wouldn’t have thought would work. I also learned how to create art in a sustainable way, understanding its beauty. A concept that I strengthened was my creative skills. I was able to go through trial and error allowing me to come up with a greater solution. I overall really enjoyed this craft and chat as I learned how to practice the act of sustainability within art.
