Ph.D. Requirements
These policies pertain to the doctoral program in Civil and Environmental Engineering. However, the student should work closely with his/her academic advisor as some focus areas have additional requirements.
Course Requirements for the Ph.D. Program
To qualify for the Ph.D. degree, the student must accomplish the following course requirements:
Complete a minimum of 36 credits of coursework beyond the Bachelor’s degree, with at least four courses from the University of Maryland College Park, with specifics to be determined by the student's advisor. If technical training is needed off-campus (i.e. instrumentation, specialized software, internships) the advisor can waive up to six credits of coursework in lieu of specialized training.
Complete a minimum of 12 semester hours of dissertation research credits (ENCE899).
Maintain a grade point average of at least 3.5 in ENCE courses and an overall grade point average of 3.0 from outside of the department.
Admissions Requirements (for current students without an M.S. degree)
All Ph.D. students must obtain a Masters degree before beginning the Ph.D. program requirements and milestones.
Current M.S. students interested in continuing to the Ph.D. should apply to the program in the final semester of their M.S. program.
Current students who were admitted to the Ph.D. directly from an undergraduate program will complete all M.S. requirements, that is completing 30 credits and defending a thesis (in most cases), before moving onto the Ph.D. program requirements.
Under special circumstances, a faculty member can request that the Graduate Committee grant a provisional acceptance for a student who does not want to receive a Master of Science degree. The credit requirements still apply in this case.
Milestone Requirements for the Ph.D. Program
Ph.D. students must also complete the following milestones:
