Maintaining Student Status

Remember that it is your responsibility to comply with all existing U.S. Government rules and regulations as they apply to you. These regulations are continually amended and changed by the U.S. Government. For additional details on these and other specific regulations, please visit the Maintaining Status page.

iTERP

ISSS has transitioned to a new immigration system called iTerp. iTerp is an online self-service portal for international students, scholars, employees, and departments that allows you to conveniently complete many of the immigration requirements for your arrival and stay at the University of Maryland. You can upload documentation, complete forms, and submit them electronically to the ISSS office.

Use iTerp to do the following:

  • Request I-20
  • iTerp Check-In for new students to submit immigration documents
  • Update employer information while on OPT, STEM OPT, or Cap Gap
  • Time Extensions
  • Final Term Paperwork (OPT, Exit Plan, etc.)

Extending I-20/DS-2019

If the completion date indicated on your I-20/DS-2019 form (see section 5 on I-20, section 3 on DS-2019) will pass before you can complete your studies, you must apply for a program extension before the program end date on the I-20/DS-2019 is reached. ISSS recommends that you see an International Student Advisor about the extension process one or two months before the end date. ISSS is only able to make extensions of 1 year due to SEVIS limitations.

To learn more about the requirements and procedure for requesting an extension, please visit the Extending I-20/DS-2019 page.

Final Term

As an international student there are some procedures and regulations you should keep in mind as you approach your final term. To learn more about these procedures and regulations, please visit the Final Term page.

International student fee

Effective Fall 2017, the University of Maryland (UMD) will charge a fee of $125.00 per semester for all newly enrolled, full time international students; students who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents. Part time students will be assessed $62.50 per semester. UMD will use the revenue from this fee to enhance support for our international students, improved academic support, expanded assistance for students transitioning to the U.S. and international student-focused cultural events to foster an engaged, supportive community.
