This can occur due to soil pollution and soil erosion. The painting shows a wide and dry landscape devoid of life and vegetation which conveys the significant effects of soil erosion and pollution.

This type of agroforestry involves planting wooded vegetation such as trees alongside annual crops such as grain crop. This type of agroforestry ensures that the soil is protected from erosion and the other crops are protected from wind damage due to the trees acting as wind breaks. This leads to less soil erosion and more sustainable agriculture

The painting shows a dark and eerie landscape. The landscape include high cliffs meeting the water. The painting references a real-life occurrence of topsoil depletion which occurred in Iceland. The painting shows the wind caring topsoil off of the cliff edge into the ocean below. This is a consequence of not using cover cropping which prevents the the soil from eroding. Cover cropping is a sustainable agricultural practice shown to prevent soil erosion.
