I, Too am America
Ciara Johnson
Quilt
This quilt represents the artist’s visual expression of her experience as a biracial woman—both Black and White—in America. It challenges the idea that mixed people are divided between two identities and proposes a more nuanced understanding of race and culture. Quilting, historically a significant art form for women, serves as a powerful medium for storytelling and reclaiming agency. It captures the artist’s journey of self-expression, family history, and cultural pride. Inspired by Pennsylvania Dutch styles and the bold abstraction of Black artists like Rosie Lee Tompkins, this piece celebrates multiculturalism, resilience, and the beauty of blended identities.
