Introduction
Conscious hip-hop is a genre and tradition that emerged as a societal reflection for African-Americans by referencing issues such as poverty, racism, and police brutality in their lyrics, thus creating discourse and protest through music. This instrumental beat tape, The Limeñan Connection, follows this tradition by reflecting the emotions and challenges faced by Latinos in 21st-century America. Although it contains no lyrics, the project communicates meaning through sound, mood, and cultural references that Latinos relate to.
Literature Review
Throughout the development of this project, many influences and research have been adopted and implemented into the idea of this tape. Hip-hop albums, from Public Enemy’s conscious Fear of a Black Planet to A$AP Rocky’s recent pop-rap album, Don’t Be Dumb, have played a part in influencing the Limeñan Connection. Scholarly sources regarding statistics and facts regarding the Latino community in America were also used as inspiration. Most sources boiled down to the fact that, especially after Donald Trump’s recent presidency, there has been a rise of not only external discrimination, but a rise in internalized racism (Hipolito-Delgado) and interpersonal discrimination (Herda). These facts were used not only to further personal consciousness of the artist toward the problems of the Latino community but also to apply the emotions that the artist felt through his research toward his music for the project.
Methods
The Limeñan Connection was created on a digital audio workspace called Ableton and utilized sampling Latino records as the primary form of creating beats. Techniques used by legendary producers like Kanye West and J Dilla were used to crea the immediate sound, like speeding up samples to gain a chipmunk-like quality to the sample while also achieving a new sound entirely, EQ-ing the low ends of a sample to emphasize the bass it already has, and playing with the mixing and mastering of every track on DAW to maximize creativity of what can be achieved through instrumental hip-hop. The project also utilizes original Latin percussion, such as bongos and clave, to continue Latino music traditions musically.
Audience & Impact
The hope for this beat-tape is to essentially leave a mark not only on the artist, but especially on the Latino community. The Limeñan Connection was a project that started all the way in October, made with passion, care, and love for both Latinos and music. Latino-Rap is an already established genre, popular in Spanish-speaking countries. This project challenges both Latino-Rap, instrumental hip-hop, and traditional hip-hop by its musical influences and strict sampling processes. The usage of only using Latino records does so, thus hopefully inspiring other Latino hip-hop producers and rappers to create their own specifically Latino-branded music. Therefore, this beat-tape is confidently dedicated to Latinos, hip-hop heads, and music lovers who are willing to experiment and listen to something that is not usually done.
