Throughout the development of my capstone, I have gone through many idea changes. It was challenging to find the most effective way to convey my message. I started by sketching a before-and-after of a man who had a loving, normal family and became homeless. However, I felt this sketch didn't convey enough information about how the man became homeless or what people on each side experienced.
My second attempt was a collage of cutout images and text from magazines. One side highlighted themes of security in a normal household. The other side highlighted what may cause homelessness and the emotions attached. However, I found that there were not many pictures, especially those related to the homelessness side, which led to more words. I decided to restart from scratch and think of a new approach to present the differences in circumstances.
I was able to change my project multiple times this semester because I was able to manage my time efficiently and use techniques like time-boxing. Time-boxing involves dividing your time into chunks to allocate time to certain tasks. I dedicated set times throughout the week to work on my capstone in order to meet deadlines and finish strong. I currently organize my time in a calendar so I always know when I have something to do or when I have free time.
My final draft is a drawing comparing the before and after of an individual in a secure family shifting into homelessness. I drew certain comparisons, like how fortunate people have homes and cars, while someone homeless may live in a tent and not have a car. I started off by creating the images I wanted to use on a draft paper. I then drew the images on an actual board, outlining first with a pencil, then going over it with a Sharpie. I finalized the drawing by adding color using colored pencils. I think my final project properly portrayed my message that life can change for anyone, and it's important to be aware that homelessness could happen to anyone.
