Over winter break, I got to see a number of great films that had just come out. The Brutalist was the one I felt most excited for and drove all the way to Silver Spring to see it. It was definitely worth it, though! It was screened in the beautiful, ornate AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, a venue that I had never been to before but had wanted badly to visit. The AFI alone was an incredible experience. It is unlike any movie theater I have ever seen. A huge space that has clearly been designed and run with care by those who love movies. Much different from a Regal or AMC. This particular screening run of The Brutalist was special because it was being shown in 70mm -- real film! My first one ever! The screen had a sort of warm flicker to it, and a little circle appeared in the corner of the screen every so often to indicate that the current reel of film needed to be swapped for the next one. As for The Brutalist itself, I found it to be a pretty solid movie. It shoots very high and very nearly reaches them. The next film I saw in a theater, Nickel Boys, I enjoyed more. However, both experiences were great. It's always neat to see a film -- it's why I'm a Cinema & Media Studies major!

Last Friday, I saw the greatest concert of my entire life. Since I discovered his incredible music, Jonathan Richman has been a staple of my monthly listening and has been a significant influence on me and my artistic sensibilities. When I discovered that he was touring and coming to Baltimore I couldn't be more ecstatic and bought a ticket immediately. Jonathan is my favorite songwriter ever and hearing his songs done by him live just inches in front of me (I was the first in the venue and right in the front) was an otherworldly experience that will never be matched. His songs are famous for their innocence and earnestness, always bringing a smile to my face as well as thousands of others. His setlist was perfect. He even did my favorite song of his, "That Summer Feeling." It's really incredible what the man can do with just his guitar and his drummer, Tommy Larkins, who utilizes an unconventional drum kit of a blown out bass drum stuffed with a blanket, a conga drum, a snare, another sort of drum, and a cymbal with a ring of mini cymbals on top. When it was all over, I wished I could have seen it all over again. As a Journalism major I wanted to ask Jonathan questions about his writing process and the feeling of being on stage while a whole crowd cheers you on. Apparently, he does not use the internet, so all interviews are conducted through snail mail. Maybe I will do that soon. I'd love to speak with him and get a glimpse of a remarkable talent in the history of rock music.
