Exigence:
To provide me with the education and training required to become an agent of change within the Navy so I can positively affect the way the military responds to multi agency relief operations.
Kairos
With the increasing divide between the military and civilian populations and declining positive associations about military service (Garamone, 2019), it will become more and more difficult for military units and civilian relief organizations to function as a cohesive team during a response to disaster. Coupled with natural disasters rising in frequency and severity (Grinsted, 2013) and larger responses from the U.S. Navy (Young, 2019) it is clear to me that there is a need for the ability to communicate across organizational culture barriers.
Guiding Theme:
How can an interdisciplinary degree studying organizational culture and disaster response help me function more effectively as a naval physician and leader during disaster response scenarios.
Research Question:
How do differences in organizational culture impact interagency coordination and communication during large scale disaster relief operations?
