In total, you’ll need to submit 3-4 documents to include in your portfolio:
Required: You will need to write a reflection letter and include it with your portfolio. When you're done reading this page, click the button at the bottom to take you to information about the reflection letter.
Required: A 1250+ word paper from your Intermediate Seminar
Required: A 750+ word paper from any UMB course (ENGL 102 recommended if you took the course at UMass Boston; a second paper from your Intermediate Seminar is also OK)
Another 750+ word paper from any UMB course*
Course papers should be the final version(s) you submitted to your instructors; don't revise your course papers after they've been graded.
*Note: If you are a first-semester transfer student you are not required to include a second 750+ word paper, but it is strongly recommended. All students are required to submit a 1)reflection letter, 2) a 1250+ word paper from the Intermediate Seminar, and a 3) 750+ word paper from any UMB course.
When choosing your papers, ask yourself these questions to keep the evaluative criteria in mind:
Which of my papers best demonstrates my ability to sustain focus on a position, argument, or inquiry?
Which of my papers best demonstrates my ability to cite, explain, and analyze sources?
Which of my papers best demonstrates my ability to organize my writing?
If you’re still not sure which papers to select, here’s some advice from EWRAP evaluators
Choose an argument-based or inquiry-based paper (rather than summary work)
Choose papers from different disciplines or different courses
Choose an essay that uses multiple scholarly sources
