Taking Sanctions off the Menu: Combating Food Insecurity in Politically Isolated Nations
Welcome!
Dear delegates,
Welcome to the 2026 UMUN Conference, and welcome to the ECOSOC General Assembly Committee, Taking Sanctions off the Menu: Combating Food Insecurity in Politically Isolated Nations! Your members of the chair are incredibly excited to welcome you to the charming city of Amherst, and even more excited to meet each of you over the course of this conference. We look forward to seeing how each delegate will represent their country’s position on an issue shaped by such a wide range of perspectives.
In this committee, delegates will be tasked with addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges: food insecurity in politically isolated countries across the globe. As we know, millions of people struggle daily to make ends meet while trying to put food on the table for themselves and their families. Hunger may take different forms in each country, but its effects are felt across all aspects of life. Whether it be caused by economic instability, war-related conflicts, or climate disasters, undernourishment affects not just individuals but the entire nation.
However, a country being politically isolated makes it even harder for outsiders to respond to the famine. Measures such as sanctions and trade restrictions can slow down or even completely block the flow of food, aid, medical assistance, and other resources. Within this committee, delegates will focus on how countries and international organizations can respond to these challenges while ensuring that the support lasts beyond just immediate relief.
We look forward to seeing you in Amherst, bringing each country’s perspective to life within this committee.
Warm regards,
Chloe Torquato & Eric Hoskins

Meet Your Chairs!
Chair I - Chloe Torquato
Hello there delegates!
My name is Chloe Torquato, and I am so excited to be your co-chair for the Taking Sanctions off the Menu: Combating Food Insecurity in Politically Isolated Nations committee! I am originally from Boston, MA, and I am currently a Freshman at UMass Amherst, majoring in Legal Studies with a certificate in International Relations. Outside of Model UN, I am a competitive swimmer, love to travel, and also spend quite some time learning new languages. Along with that, I also enjoy my many tutoring jobs, and trying out different foods!
Both my co-chair and I are thrilled to welcome you to this conference. This is my second time staffing a Model UN conference, so I am very excited to bring that experience to our committee room to ensure that we have a fantastic conference! Our goal is to provide you with an unforgettable and enjoyable experience, so be sure to let me know if there is anything else that I can do to make your experience at the conference the best it can be. Aside from that, best of luck with your research and preparation, and we’ll see you soon around Amherst!
See you soon,
Chloe Torquato

On behalf of ourselves and UMass Model United Nations, we would like to welcome you to, and thank you for attending, the third UMUN conference. We would also like to thank you for choosing our conference. We hope to make this conference a great experience for everyone.
