The PRAGMA project is exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the way we design and manufacture prosthetic wearables. Today, making prosthetics that are both comfortable and highly functional often requires long, complex processes. PRAGMA aims to change this by creating an AI-powered framework that can quickly generate and refine designs, while also checking how well they can be fabricated, assembled, and adapted to each person’s needs.
Our approach combines human-centred design thinking with the latest advances in generative AI, using large language models (LLMs) to help engineers and designers explore new possibilities. We will demonstrate this framework through the design and prototyping of adaptive prosthetic devices, with validation work ensuring that the solutions are feasible and practical. By doing so, PRAGMA will show how prompt-driven AI tools can speed up product development, improve personalisation, and support smarter, more flexible manufacturing, with the overall goal of making advanced prosthetics more accessible, adaptive, and responsive to the people who need them.
