MIMA project aims to investigate why and how plastic have impact in the marine environment, in particular in the deep waters of the mesopelagic layer. This study will evaluate the characteristics of the plastics and comparing them to the characteristics of the natural preys of deep-diving predators, and to propose mitigations measures in terms of plastic composition and strucure. In the end, the project will contribute to mitigate marine pollution and its impacts on living marine organisms and comunities.

The CEPHATAG system will be a novel combination of existent implantable electronic archival tags with a combination of multiple sensors (Time, Tª, depth, salinity, 3- axis accelerometer) and a purpose-designed external anchoring system for squids, that comprise a buoyant system, a VHF beeper and a timer release, that will allow reuse the tag and recover it multiple times reducing the effective cost of data acquisition by tag deployed.
