Did you know that scientific research has shown that learning grammar actually stops you from learning a language. The grammar you learnt at school, or English language school, is used for written English. This is why so many students of English sound like an official letter from the Ministry of Education.
So, how on earth did you learn your native language? You couldn't read, you couldn't speak, you could not understand what on earth these very nice people (your parents) were saying, and you were completely unable you certainly couldn't write either.
So how did you manage to learn your native language?
The answer is very very simple:
YOU LISTENED WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!

Adults don't listen, they only hear snippets
But Here's The Problem ...

When we are young we are able to listen. That's why children who are too young to read or write are able to learn a language. From the very day they are born, children LISTEN. That is why children love being told stories, they listen to the words and then they absorb them into their sub conscious mind.
You will never see a small child consciously trying to memorise a huge list of words their parents have given them. Or poring over grammar books
Language learning does not work like that.
So, all we have to do is just listen, right? Yes, but the only thing is, when children reach about 13 or 14 years old they STOP LISTENING, not because they are teenagers, but because they are becoming adults, and adults don't listen. They hear.
They hear snippets from the conversation and not a lot else...
