Course Description

SEMESTER 1

· Arabic Writing Skills (BAP410)

This course is designed to train students in Arabic writing skills in Arabic which includes the use of punctuation, word writing and hamzah. Students are trained to word construct sentences grammatically. They are also trained to use cohesive devices and coherence in paragraph writing and write paragraphs and essays with correct and grammatical selection of vocabulary, discourse, and sentences.

· Arabic Reading Skills (BAP405)

This course has been designed to equip students with appropriate skills on Arabic reading skills using proper techniques and strategies. Students will be trained to read Arabic texts in different genres and levels. Students will also be expected to be able to analyze main and sub main ideas throughout constant practical exercises.

· Morphology (BAP407)

This course emphasizes the concept and rules of Arabic word formation. Students will be taught al-mizan as-sarfiy, authentic and verbal verbs. In addition, the verbs mujarrad and mazid, tasrif, masdar and, mushtaqqat and I’lal wa ibdal are also emphasized. Students will be trained to apply the rules in order to form Arabic word and use it in the sentences.

· Arabic Syntax I (BAP408)

This course is the first level of Arabic syntax. It focuses on the Arabic word classes as well as al-mubtada (subject) and al-khabar (predicate). In addition, it also emphasizes al-fa’il and al-maful bih. Students also will be exposed to al-mabniy and al-murab for nouns and verbs.

· Arabic Listening and Speaking Skills (BAP409)

This course will guide and equip students listening and speaking skills in Arabic language. Both skills will be trained through various material and different activities. Besides, students will demonstrate their ability in both skills spontaneously through presentation and discussion in Arabic.


SEMESTER 2

· Language and Linguistics (Arabic Language) (ALS424)

This course introduces students to the history and origins of Arabic language, the contribution of past scholars as well as the current development of Arabic language. This course also discusses nature of language and linguistic aspects in general. Nature of language will be discussed through its origin, roles and its characteristics while linguistics discipline emphasize on its principles, modern linguistic schools as well as the discipline of theoretical and applied linguistics.

· Arabic Writing for Academic Purposes (ALS445)

This course focuses on academic writing purposes as a platform to convey ideas. It presents writing as a process of social response across the curriculum, critical thinking and individual intellectual development. Students are trained to write various academic topics using the appropriate writing strategies.

· Modern Arabic Culture (ALS456)

This course aims to expose students to knowledge of Modern Arabic culture. Through this course students are introduced to the general cultural concepts and theories. Aspects of Arab culture in particular are discussed by studying the background of Arab society as well as the cultural characters present in contemporary Arab society.

· Principle of Communication (Arabic Language) (BAP455)

This course introduces students to the concepts, fundamentals and strategies of communication. It also describes the forms of communication. In addition, students are introduced to the process of communication, its function and its impact on the society. Students will also be exposed to the role and impact of media in communication.

· Arabic Syntax II (BAP459)

This course is an extension of the Syntax I course. It aims to equip students with the Arabic grammar concept. Students will be introduced to a number of concepts such as majrurat (idafah, na’at and ‘ataf) and mansubaat (maf’ul fiih, maf’ull li ajlih, maf’uul mutlaq, maf’ull ma’ahu, tawkid, badal and haal). Students are also exposed to a variety of language (uslub) or styles such as uslub istifham, uslub syarat and uslub ta’ajjub.

· Arabic Language and Information Technology (BAP460)

This course aims to train students the use of information technology to improve their communication skills. Students are exposed to the world of technology and their role in applying Arabic in content development. Students are taught to use computers and the internet through the Arabic activities in various software such as Microsoft office software, graphics, multimedia, web applications and e-learning. This course focuses in student-centered teaching approach through active learning, practice training, group discussion, assignments, presentations and practical projects.


SEMESTER 3

· Presentation Skills (Arabic Language) (BAE508)

This course aims to equip students with practical presentation techniques in Arabic. Through this course students are trained to plan and prepare presentation material in effective form. Students are also taught how to deliver oral presentation creatively and effectively.

· Strategic Storytelling (Arabic Language) (BAP509)

This course is designed to equip students with formal or in-formal presentation skill through the strategic storytelling. In this course Students will be introduced with principles and types of strategic storytelling. Students will be exposed with the narrative concepts and techniques in strategic storytelling to persuade and convince audiences to follow a course of action or to agree to a commitment, or to purchase a product or service.

· Theory and Practice of Translation (Arabic Language) (BAP510)

This course equips students with the discipline of translation science that covers theory and practical aspects with focusing on Arabic language. The section of translation theory discusses the development of the world of translation in terms of history, definition, principles and theories. The hands-on part of the translation process includes analysing the source languages, finding translation matches and redefining matches in the target language.

· Arabic Communication Skills Through Drama (BAP511)

This course aims to equip students with Arabic (oral and written) communication skills through drama activities. It also aims to increase the students’ confidence, creativity and imagination in communicating. Students will first be exposed to the basics of drama and later to communication techniques. It will then be followed by a series of exercises through practical drama performances.


SEMESTER 4

· Arabic For Professional Communication (BAP558)

This course exposes students to workplace communication skills required for different professional discourse. Students will use this knowledge to become effective communicators in formal professional settings. These include interviews, formal discussions, meetings and presentations. In addition, messages, memos, letters, e-mails and proposal will be covered.

· Critical Thinking in Arabic Language Learning (ALS558)

This course exposes students to the concepts and importance of critical thinking with a focus on learning Arabic. Through this course, students are trained to apply critical thinking strategies to language learning through four listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. Students will develop their critical thinking skills through identified critical thinking activities. The student-centered learning approach is used through group discussions, role plays, assignments, presentations and community services.

· Register and Discourse in Arabic Media (BAE608)

This course is aimed to introduce students generally to principles of mass media and specifically to Arabic mass media. Students will firstly be introduced to principles of discourse and register in general. Students also will be exposed to types of Arabic mass media. They also will be trained to analyze and to comprehend the use of terminologies and sentences in various Arabic media in different countries. They will be trained to use language and the terminologies in practical orally and in writing.

· Intercultural Pragmatics (Arabic Language) (BAP559)

This course aims to expose students to the issues in intercultural pragmatics. Students will examine the pragmatic components of human interaction within an intercultural context. Students will firstly be introduced to main pragmatics theories which includes speech act theories, conversational implications, politeness as well as the role of culture in communication. After that students will analyze some issues in intercultural communication such as greetings, small talk, thanking, apologizing, praising, turn taking etc.


SEMESTER 5

· Research Methodology (Arabic Language) (ALS608)

This course aims to equip students with the philosophy, principles and methods applicable to language research. Students will be familiar with the systematic processes required in quantitative and qualitative research. This course will focus on theoretical and practical issues that include research design, data collection, data analysis, interpretation of data, research applications, abstract preparation and research proposal writing. Attention will also be given to other aspects of research such as documentation, plagiarism and editing.

· Effective Public Speaking Skills (Arabic Language) (BAE601)

This course aims to equip students with basic knowledge of the theory and principles of public speaking skills. Through this course students are trained to prepare the text of the speech according to the specific purpose and situation. Students are also trained to deliver speech effectively.

· Arabic for Tourism (BAE606)

This course aims to expose students to the field of tourism with a focus on Arab and domestic tourism. Through this course, students will be introduced to basic information in the field of tourism. Students are also trained to communicate and interact in Arabic language for tourism purposes. In addition, the course aims to build entrepreneurial mind among students in tourism.

· The Pedagogy of Teaching Arabic Language (BAE607)

This course is designed to equip students with the theory of Arabic language teaching methodology to non-Arabic speaker. The students will be exposed to the effective techniques in teaching Arabic skills and at the of the course students will apply the teaching technique in mock teaching presentation.

· Arabic Language and e-Content Development (BAE609)

This course aims to train students using current software technology to develop Arabic e- content applications. Students are exposed to the world of software technology and online applications in the context of Arabic language content development through various media. Students are also exposed to a systematic development process through models of instructional design. The process may be applied through desktop software technology, rapid authoring applications and authoring application online by enabling the Arabic script.

· Effective Negotiation and Persuasion Skills (Arabic Language) (BAP605)

This course is designed for the purpose of studying negotiation theory and techniques. Students are trained to execute negotiation and persuasion activities. They will be exposed to principles, steps, method, tactics in negotiation as well as theories and language of persuasion. Students will apply and demonstrate negotiation and persuasion activities based on tasks provided.


SEMESTER 6

· Practical Training (ALS653)

This course aims to expose students to gaining work experience through practical training in the field of employment relevant to Arabic Communication Professionals. Students will be engaged in practical training in related industries for a period of 4 months. Students can choose whether to pursue training in the public or private sectors. This practical training course will be supervised by a faculty member and a supervisor at the training organization.

· Academic Project (ALS662)

This course requires students to conduct research and provide of research reports in Arabic includes 10,000 to 15,000 words. Students are allowed to choose research topics in areas that have been identified with the supervision and guidance of the supervisor. Students need to prepare the literature review, collect the data and analyze the data to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of the study were also shared in the presentation session held at the end of semester.
