Purpose: Assess which sensory system (vision, somatosensory, vestibular) may be impaired in balance by adding and removing sensory conditions in 4 trials.
Summary: To administer the test, a patient is asked to stand with their feet together and hands at their sides in 4 different conditions. In each condition, the patient is timed with a goal of a 30 second completion without changes in foot position. If unable to complete the position, the patient is given 2 additional trials and the 3 measurements are averaged. Patient sway is noted in each trial. Based on the patient’s ability to complete various conditions, it can be determined what sensory systems are affected.

There is not yet evidence to suggest the use of the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration on Balance (mCTSIB) with patients after a brain injury who are completely independent, mildly dependent, moderately dependent, or are severely dependent. The mCTSIB has limited studies on use in acute care, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and home health.
