Background
This project builds on decades of aphid monitoring efforts that have taken place in Idaho in one form or another. The University of Idaho, the Idaho Potato Commission, and the USDA-NIFA-CPPM-Extension Implementation Program, project 2021-70006-35386 help support this particular effort, which requires intense travel in southeast Idaho and labor every week through the growing season. You can find more information on this and other Idaho pest monitoring programs at the Idaho Pest Monitoring website.
Impact
Stakeholders use this information to identify when to initiate mineral oil applications to potato foliage. These applications should be made at least once a week, and our monitoring data indicate that applications should begin in early June or early emergence and continue at least through early August. We have shown that aphid flights occur throughout the growing season, and these flights pose the most risk for moving potato virus y to healthy plants.
