THE LOCAL LORE MUSEUM OF THE «PROSVITA» SOCIETY OF SUBCARPATHIAN RUS IN UZHHOROD: FROM THE IDEA TO CREATION AND THE ISSUES OF ITS FUNCTIONING AND DEVELOPMENT (1920–1938)

Abstract:
The article highlights the process of establishing a local lore museum by the «Prosvita» Society of Subcarpathian Rus’ in Uzhhorod during the 1920s. The author focuses on the challenges associated with this process and describes the collections of historical, cultural, and natural monuments of the region gathered for the museum. Furthermore, the article details the thematic structure and content of the exhibition, which consisted of seven departments: ethnographic, ecclesiastical, archaeological, ceramic, natural history, photographs of wooden architecture monuments, and manuscripts and early printed books of the 16th–18th centuries. The study traces the museum’s transformation in 1930, following the Statute adopted at the constituent assembly, into an institution with a clearly defined Ukrainian ethnic orientation under the name «Ruthenian National Museum». It is noted that its activities were intended to cover, and did indeed cover, not only the Ukrainian-Ruthenian ethnic territory of Subcarpathian Rus’ but also areas belonging to Slovakia. The research examines the field-collecting and other efforts aimed at accumulating materials related to the history and Ukrainian culture of Subcarpathian Rus’. Additionally, it analyzes the reasons for the decline and cessation of its activities in 1938–1939, as well as the fate of its collected antiquities and other collections.
