Abstract:

The article examines the figure of Oleksandr Dukhnovych as an outstanding educator, enlightener, organizer of school education in Transcarpathia in the nineteenth century, and an active participant in the field of publishing. Particular attention is paid to his contribution to the development of public education, the formation of national consciousness, and the dissemination of cultural and educational ideas among the population of the region. The pedagogical activity of Oleksandr Dukhnovych, his aspiration to make education accessible to broad segments of the population, as well as, his role in the establishment and support of public schools in Transcarpathia, are analyzed. The study characterizes the first public primer for Transcarpathia, compiled by the educator, and defines its structure, content, and educational significance for the development of primary education. The innovative nature of Oleksandr Dukhnovych’s textbooks, their correspondence to the needs of the society of that time, and their influence on the formation of the educational environment of the region are examined. The peculiarities of the author’s methodological approaches aimed at combining education, upbringing, and the spiritual development of children are highlighted. Special attention is paid to the problem of orphanhood in the creative heritage of the educator. The humanistic views of Oleksandr Dukhnovych concerning the upbringing of orphaned children, his aspiration to provide them with appropriate conditions for education and moral development, are analyzed. The relevance of the educator’s pedagogical ideas in the modern educational space, as well as, their significance for the development of humanistic pedagogy, is emphasized.
