Abstract:
Global environmental challenges and issues of sustainability increasingly emphasize the importance of informal, experiential, and experience-based environmental education. Through their living collections and educational infrastructure, botanical gardens support the development of natural science competencies and the formation of environmentally conscious attitudes as unique and complex learning environments. The aim of the present study is to explore the pedagogical potential of the József Szikura Botanical Garden operating at the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education. Due to the comprehensive nature of the research and limitations of length, the presentation of the results is divided into two parts. This first paper focuses on clarifying the theoretical foundations and pedagogical tools of environmental education in botanical gardens (e.g., experiential pedagogy, gamification, experiential learning), as well as presenting the infrastructural features of the garden. The study provides a detailed overview of the historical background of the 0.82-hectare garden and analyzes the role of the main collections functioning as outdoor learning spaces, with particular emphasis on the dendrological, herbaceous, and medicinal and spice plant collections in field-based education. The research confirms that the garden’s rich taxonomic collection provides an excellent basis for the experiential understanding of biodiversity. The presentation of specific indoor and outdoor interactive educational tools, as well as the developed lesson plans based on them, will be included in the second part of the study.
