Abstract:

The article examines the work of the famous Transcarpathian musician, composer and conductor Mykola Yakovych Popenko – known in the Transcarpathian region and far beyond its borders. His contribution to the development and popularization of Transcarpathian song culture is proven.

The history of Transcarpathian folk song dates back to ancient times and covers several centuries, representing the basis of the national culture of Transcarpathia. In modern history, starting from the beginning of the 20th century, Transcarpathian song receives a new powerful impetus to its development, thanks to the emergence of a number of creative societies. In particular, such as: «Boyan», «Kobzar», which were later reorganized into the «Regional Choir of Subcarpathian Teachers», a collective that traveled with concerts throughout Transcarpathia, as well as Slovakia and Romania. In the modern history of musical Transcarpathia, one of the brightest representatives – singers and creators of Transcarpathian folk song is an extremely talented musician, a bright composer, under whose power there were the most diverse genres of music, but his multifaceted talent manifested itself most deeply and brightly in the genre of arrangement of Transcarpathian folk song. The name of this iconic figure is Mykola Yakovych Popenko.

The name of Mykola Yakovych Popenko is known in the artistic circles of our region, throughout Ukraine and far beyond its borders, especially among fans of folk songs. His work as the artistic director and chief conductor of the Honored Transcarpathian Folk Choir was one of the peaks in the history of this famous collective. Mykola Yakovych Popenko knew folk music, song, and dance perfectly.
