Abstract:
The article examines the theoretical foundations and practical approaches to individualizing literacy acquisition among primary school children with special educational needs (SEN). The study focuses on the development and implementation of three original didactic tools – the «Colour Syllables» method, the mini-pantbook, and the «Graphikan» graphic cards – designed to enhance reading skills through multisensory, visual, and structured learning strategies. The «Colour Syllables» system supports stable mastery of syllabic reading by reinforcing visual differentiation and sensory integration; the mini-pantbook facilitates comprehension, promotes text structuring, and develops reflective reading skills; the «Graphikan» cards provide schematic and pictographic support, enabling active content processing and improving fine motor coordination. Drawing on contemporary Ukrainian and international research, the article demonstrates the pedagogical effectiveness of multimodal and visually mediated tools in addressing common learning barriers in children with SEN, including attention instability, difficulties in phonological awareness, limited working memory, and reduced motivation. The proposed author-developed materials create favourable conditions for increasing students’ engagement, enhancing comprehension, and supporting sustainable progress in individual, inclusive, and distance learning environments. The findings underline the relevance of differentiated and adaptive didactic resources as a means of improving educational outcomes and ensuring equitable access to literacy development.
