Abstract:
The article reveals the fact of theatrical practice – the first stage embodiment of the cultural and artistic performance «Vertep» on the professional stage by the outstanding Ukrainian director Les Kurbas. The original artistic phenomenon of the Nativity Scene, having undergone centuries of development and transformation, continues to operate not only in the cultural sphere of Ukrainian society, but also constantly appears in the repertoire announcements of theater groups in Ukraine. The famous actor, director, theater theorist, teacher, and reformer of stage art, Les Kurbas, at the beginning of his creative and experimental path, turned to the stage embodiment of amateur folk, ancient, mainly puppet, religious and everyday action, on the stage of the Ukrainian professional theater. It was in terms of experimental search that the Nativity Scene was included in the repertoire of the «Young Theater» as a folk traditional performance, which acquired a bright theatrical stage solution. In this production of the «Christmas Nativity Scene», as an experiment, Les Kurbas allowed himself to depart from life’s verisimilitude and psychology, and attached great importance to the actors’ mastery of the basics of stage movement. Les Kurbas’s staging of «Vertep», the director’s appeal to the vertep action, his attraction to the folklore primary sources of theatrical art, to the folk primitive as an aesthetic integrity became fundamentally important. They expressed the search for the primary origins of theatricality. And at the same time, they wanted to return to theatrical art its folk foundations - strong feelings, freedom of thought of the audience and simplicity of expressive stage means, where movement, word and music will help actors in the interaction of the characters being played, and most importantly, to fulfill the desire to go beyond the means of traditional everyday performance. The theme of vertep has become an integral content of the curricula of art education institutions and their departments, especially of puppet theater art. «Vertep» as a fundamental basis of puppet theater art requires detailed consideration and study in all its manifestations and features.
