Abstract:

The article highlights the peculiarities of R. Skaletskyi's pedagogical activity in working with the M. Leontovych Choir in 1926-1932, the specifics of working with this amateur choir and the organisation of training at the first conductor´s courses in 1926 in Tulchyn. The scientific research is based on the memoirs of R. Skaletskyi's grand-niece L. Natolochna, certain members of the choir, local history experts of Tulchyn district, materials of periodicals and funds of the State Archives of Vinnytsia Oblast.

The central focus is placed on identifying the main forms and methods of organising music education and upbringing in the work of R. Skaletskyi with the M. Leontovych Tulchyn Choir and on the peculiarities of repertoire formation. It is emphasised that the main purpose of the classes was to foster a strong interest of choristers in Ukrainian folk songs and choral music. It was determined the peculiar democratic type of conductor-choirmaster of R. Skaletskyi..

The basic principles of national education in the work of a teacher with this amateur group are highlighted.

Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the organisation of theoretical and practical classes at the first conductor´s courses in 1926 and the difficult historic conditions of Stalin's repressions in the thirties of the 20th century, when R. Skaletskyi was stamped as a nationalist and punished for his counter-revolutionary activities.

It has been found that the basis of the success of the chapel choir under the direction of R. Skaletskyi was the use of Ukrainian folk songs arranged by M. Leontovych, R. Skaletskyi, as well as classical works in the repertoire. The positive activity of conductor´s courses and the successful solution of urgent problems of training music directors in this district were noted.
