Falling behind in course content is often a combination of getting confused in class and then not staying on track with assignments due to said confusion. While, the key to solving one’s confusion is at times one question away, a lot of students feel intimidated or ashamed to ask that question because they are afraid of being perceived as unintelligent. And even when the courage to ask is gathered, it is often further into the topic (or even semester) that it feels even more shameful to ask the professor. Therefore, it is important to know alternative resources on campus to lean on when confusion strikes. As an engineering student, here are some of my favorite resources at UIC that have helped me stay on top of my game (not just academically):
The Engineering Learning Center: as an engineering student, the engineering learning center is the most frequent academic resource that I use. This center has student tutors for BME, CME, CS, ECE, IE, and ME courses. What I love about this resource is that it has a hybrid option where you can either log in online or go to the engineering center in person. The engineering learning center also has resume editing services that are useful when applying for internships, research positions, and graduate programs.
The EIEP Lounge: The equity and inclusion in the engineering program is another on-campus location that I use. While I mainly use this center as a studying space, however, the center hosts study jams for specific courses each week. I love this center because it serves as a social gathering spot while still getting some meaningful schoolwork done.
Cultural Centers: The seven cultural centers at UIC are also great places to relax or study as they have nicely decorated spaces (and some have snacks too).
UIC Writing Center: I feel like writing centers are one the most underrated resources at schools. I love utilizing the writing center at my school to get outside feedback on my papers, especially before I submit a written application.
