PROTECT is a public health intervention (detailed below). Our research team members are typically graduate (Master's or PhD-level) students in public health or clinical psychology. We have worked with medical students whose undergraduate education included courses in social science (psychology, sociology, anthropology, statistics, economics), and we are open to working with committed undergraduates who are interested in parenting, early childhood development, oral health, nutrition, or gaining experience with clinical trials. Research assistants for PROTECT may gain hands-on research experience in participant recruitment, enrollment, data collection and data management. We require a minimum of 8-10 hours of commitment per week for at least one year.

PROTECT (Preventing Recurrent Operations Targeting Early Childhood Caries Treatment) is an NIH/NIDCR funded clinical trial. The objective of the study is to determine the efficacy of a six-month parenting intervention in order to help families in minoritized communities change their health behaviors. The primary behavioral outcomes are a child’s (1) toothbrushing behaviors and (2) consumption of sugar. The study participants will be recruited from UIC Pediatric Dental Clinic. This process entails recruitment and enrollment activities and collecting participant data at several time points during the 12-month study period.
