Prospective PhD Students

Now Recruiting PhD Students! (UIC Dept. of Anthropology)

Dr. Nicholas has a secondary appointment and recruits PhD students through the Department of Anthropology. She is currently particularly looking to recruit a student to work on the "DENTAGE" project to develop a new system of dental age estimation (funded by the NIJ), though applicants wishing to work on other projects will also be considered. She also mentors student research related to topics such as:

-Paleoanthropology (genus Homo)

-Craniofacial growth and development

-Dental anthropology

-Biomedical anthropology (oral health)

The UIC Department of Anthropology is located in Chicago in Little Italy/University Village. UIC is an R1 research institution with colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Applied Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Art Design & Architecture, Law, and Urban Planning and Public Affairs.

UIC Anthropology has ties with the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History. We have several faculty with joint appointments at the Field and in UIC Anthro. Our graduate students can also apply for Field Museum affiliations.

Dr. Nicholas's students gain exposure to both dentistry and anthropology

The Nicholas Lab is located in the UIC College of Dentistry (801 S. Paulina St.). Nicholas Lab students have opportunities to attend seminars in both Anthropology and College of Dentistry and to interact with the students in the PhD in Oral Sciences program.

Note: Under select circumstances Dr. Nicholas may recruit students through the PhD in Oral Sciences program. Students wishing to join the Nicholas Lab through the PhD in Oral Sciences progam should be trained dentists or aspiring DMD/PhD students who wish to study: craniofacial growth & development; obesity and oral health; or related topics.
