Class overview
There two writing aspects to this course:
(I) Writing mathematics,
(II) Writing about mathematics, or topics of a mathematical flavour.
For the above, students will be preparing homework and other writing assignments. Finally, another aspect of the course is spending some time thinking about:
(III) Fundamental issues of mathematics.
The overall goal of the semester will be to write an article about mathematics, of the quality and level of a mathematics magazine. Those who wish to include their articles in a published mathematics magazine, will be able to do so by making the contribution to MATH 300 Fall 2021's magazine "Mathematics - Where are you?". The articles need to be about mathematical concepts appearing within some application: it could be some concept from pure mathematics with its exposition of how it is used elsewhere, or it could be about a cultural or natural (or other) phenomenon which involves some mathematics.
During the semester, we will be drafting and re-drafting these articles, improving them through the learned skills, and this will allow us to have a final essay of very high quality.
