The role of information and factual knowledge in the classroom has shifted. Knowledge and deep understanding develops when students make connections among and across disciplines and realms of learning. Students access information and apply their understanding to complex and rich tasks.
The learning skills required in a 21st century classroom, like critical thinking, collaboration, logic and awareness of algorithms, creativity and synthesizing are foundational and provide access to the tools for problem-solving.
The 21st century discourse about the importance of a growth mindset and a risk-taking disposition indicates how new educational methods recognize the important role of attributes in student success. Encouraging student-centered pedagogy that prepares students to be thinkers and problem-solvers contributes to the development of these significant attributes.
