This course introduces students to building materials and processes through opportunities to design and build various construction projects. Students will learn to create and read working drawings; become familiar with common construction materials, components, and processes; and perform a variety of fabrication, assembly, and finishing operations. They will use a variety of hand and power tools and apply knowledge of imperial and metric systems of measurement, as appropriate. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the industry.

This course is intended for all students who want to learn about both woodworking and construction. Prior experience in woodworking or construction is not required or expected. Students will learn to safely use tools, materials, equipment and methods in this hands on course. Students will interpret drawings and will plan, design and build woodworking projects that they will be proud to take home. This course will also give you basic knowledge of building science, introduce the Ontario building code and the structural engineering of a residential home through the building of construction components. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to careers and get hands on experience using current industry techniques and trade specific tools.

This practical course is designed for students who are interested in developing a further understanding of both woodworking and residential construction. Students will continue to gain hands on experience and the safe use of woodworking and construction materials, tools, equipment and processes. Students will continue to extend their knowledge of construction terminology, building science and the Ontario building code while exploring residential construction and it’s components. Woodworking will be project based, allowing students to plan, design, and fabricate projects that they will be proud to take home. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to careers and get hands on experience using current industry techniques and trade specific tools.
