Reading at home

Parents often wonder how to support their child at home in English reading. There are lots of ways:

  • Listen to your child read aloud (choose texts close to independent reading level)
  • Read books to your child (choose texts by interest at a variety of levels)
  • Read with your child (choose texts at independent reading level or slightly higher)
  • Encourage them to read anything that interests them - comic books, graphic novels, magazines, fiction or non-fiction,...

How do you find their independent reading level?

  1. Talk with your teacher OR
  2. Experiment. If they stumble over more than a few words per 100 words of text, the book is too challenging to read independently.

Lots of book sellers offer levelled reading materials for children. One of the best websites I have come across is called The Best Children's Books.org. This website arranges many popular titles by reading level, topic and academic area. It is a terrific resource for finding appropriate book titles.

If you prefer to read online materials (at no cost!), the school board website UG2GO offers resources such as TumbleBooks, TumbleBook Cloud Junior and BookFlix with a vast selection of books to listen to and read along. Your child likely knows their login and password by now, however I can provide this to you if necessary.

Happy reading!
