Injuries Pile Up, but Shorthanded Broncos Beat Prairie Thursday Night
Injuries Pile Up, but Shorthanded Broncos Beat Prairie Thursday Night
Senior Gabe Ignasiak (#3) gives chase to a Prairie mid on Thursday night with classmate Cade Dobrinska (background right) looking on in support.
The Broncos began Thursday night's match at Prairie short 2 starters, and ended short 4 in a hard-fought 2-0 win in Racine. Sophomore Mason Rick and senior Owen Sheahan missed the match with precautionary injuries, but UG still found a way. Senior Niall Hagen scored just before halftime in the 34th minute after the host Hawks failed to clear their lines after a corner, Hagen intercepted a ball and fired it into the left corner to make it 1-0. In the 2nd half, pure hussle by senior Ethan Barsch led to a second tally, as he gave chase to an errand pass and won a challenge near the Prairie penalty area, then took it in to score from in close to make it 2-0 in the 53rd. That would be all the offense the Broncos would need, as they hung on late watching junior Cam DaPra and senior Niall Hagen leave the field injured late in the game. "Guys get hurt, that's sports... it was good to see some players step up tonight when we needed them. Urijah played well in the middle, Kellen gave us some good minutes up top... it was a team win. Just need to get everyone healthy now" commented Coach Jung after the victory. Next up the Broncos will travel to Westosha for their final Southern Lakes Conference match of 2025, looking for their first win at the Falcons since 2016. Good luck boys, get healed and let's go Broncos!
Another Draw for JV Broncos at the Prairie School Thursday
The JV Broncos tied a record on Thursday, though perhaps not one to write home about, recording their third-consecutive draw in as many games. Historically you have to travel back to the 2015 season the last time it happened, when the JV Broncos tied 3-straight in early September of that year. On this evening at the Prairie School in Racine, the JV Broncos took an early lead behind freshman Miles Grzyb, as he took junior Garrett Klepel's pass near the top of the area and perfectly lofted his strike over the host Hawk's goalkeeper from atop the box to make it 1-0. UG wouldn't be able to hold the lead however, conceding a header after failing to clear just minutes before halftime. Tied 1-1 at the break, the game-winner was there and waiting for the Broncos, but their best chance off the foot of sophomore Sean Barsch rocketed over the goal and UG settled for their third-consecutive draw. "I liked our energy tonight, we moved the ball very well at times... but as has been our struggle all season, we still lack a finish. This is one we probably should've won, but credit our defense for keeping us in it" summarized Coach Jaworksi after the match. Next up the Broncos will travel to Racine Case on Saturday for a JV Tournament, first match is at 9am. Good luck boys, finish the season strong and go Broncos!
Sophomore Gil Sass (#9) looks to make a run from the Bronco right wing on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action in Racine.
