The event “International Mathematics Days V”, of a scientific, technological, and innovative nature, aims to foster the exchange of knowledge in various areas of mathematics, applied mathematics, and mathematics education. The tenth edition of the traditional Mathematics Day, in its fifth international version, will take place from May 4 to 8, 2026, at the Department of Mathematics (DMA) of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV).
Over five days, the event will offer a diverse program, including advanced lectures, short courses, and research presentations in different areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and mathematics education. The participation of national and international researchers is expected, which will contribute to strengthening dialogue among different scientific communities and consolidating academic cooperation networks.
Complementing the scientific program, this edition proposes outreach and science communication activities, focusing on promoting mathematics among teachers and students from the public school system in Viçosa and surrounding areas. This initiative aims to strengthen local mathematics education and culture, spark young people’s interest in the field, and encourage the development of new talents.
As part of the special program, on May 6, the date on which the National Day of Mathematics is celebrated, the DMA and the Graduate Program in Mathematics will host the sub-event “Celebration of the National Day of Mathematics II”, with an emphasis on outreach and the popularization of mathematics. This sub-event will feature the Mathematics Fair for All, open to the community, where school teams from the region will present projects and compete for awards. The fair will seek to present, in an accessible and interactive way, different areas of mathematical research and their applications, as well as publicize the department’s outreach activities and programs such as OBMEP (the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools).
With this event, it is expected to broaden its impact beyond the academic environment, making an effective contribution to the scientific, educational, and social development of the region.
This is a scientific event that will take place on May 4, 5, 7, and 8, 2026, and will include guest lectures, mini-lectures (thematic sessions), poster presentations, and research/project definition presentations.
In addition, in this edition of the event, we will have the support of our colleagues from the graduate programs in Science and Mathematics Education, who will simultaneously organize activities such as Mathematical Games Workshops and an Academic Work Showcase, as well as lectures and short courses focused on mathematics education throughout the week of the event.
On May 6 (National Mathematics Day), a sub-event called the Celebration of National Mathematics Day will be held, coordinated by the Head of the DMA with the collaboration of the Organizing Committee of the International Days of Mathematics event. The program of this sub-event, focused on the popularization of mathematics, will include a Mathematics Fair for All, with the active participation of teams from local schools. The teams will compete in various activities related to mathematics in everyday life.
In addition, other activities will take place, such as the OBMEP award ceremony, the Women in Mathematics Museum, and the Mathematics, Music, and Art session, open to all participants. This program will be offered separately, with a distinct schedule that will be provided later.
Special Lectures (Morning Sessions)
In the mornings, we will have 12 advanced lectures in various areas of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, including one lecture focusing on the applications of mathematics in AI. These will take place over 4 days. In addition, we will have four short courses, two of which will be offered in the mornings during the scientific event.
Thematic Sessions, Roundtables, and Short Courses (Afternoon Sessions)
In the afternoons, we will have thematic sessions that include mini-lectures. Each day will be dedicated to a specific theme, with up to 4 mini-lectures per day. Moreover, on other days, the afternoon sessions will be dedicated to the presentation of research work by faculty members from the graduate program as well as our invited speakers.
