Beau the Therapy Dog
We love Beau. His face makes us happy. Even Beau’s picture brings good feelings, while petting his fluff calms us. We aren’t the only ones moved by animals. Animal-assisted therapy is a data-supported practice offering benefits for hospital patients and studying students.
How to get your badge: Watch a puppy or kitten cam at explore.org or follow these cams https://www.waterford.org/resources/live-animal-cams-for-kids/. Or follow Beauthetherapydog, Thelentilbean, buttercuptherapy, kenziethegreyt on Instagram.
Button Designing
Art projects can help reduce stress by creating “flow” states. Flow states allow someone to be fully present and engaged - a state promoting creativity and focus on the moment with distractions receding from the mind. There is a sense of joy with little self-awareness or judgment.
How to get your badge: Consider making your own designs for buttons- you can design for free at https://www.wackybuttons.com/ . Make a series of designs small enough to fit in a 1.5-2.0” circle and share on Instagram with the hashtag #quarantinebuttondesign. Share with us your design in today's report!
Exploring Nature
If you enjoy walking in the woods, or the beach you are not alone. Research shows that nature - in a forest, or garden, on a beach or boat, promotes well-being. In Japan, shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, is prescribed by doctors. Combining nature and art further enhances health.
How to get your badge: Explore nature, through local parks or virtually though webcams at explore.org, Zoos and Aquariums. Record what you see in some way- photography, drawing, sound recording. Consider submitting observations via iNaturalist. Share your recordings in today's report!
A Puzzling Activity
Working on a jigsaw puzzle is a way to relax and refocus on a task, while also to help reduce stress. It also can improve problem solving skills and attention span. Finally, it develops observational and visual-spatial skills - helping to see the details or the bigger picture.
How to get your badge: Try a virtual puzzle, such as the National Geographic Photo Puzzles, https://www.nationalgeographic.com/games/photo-puzzle-jigsaw/ Jigsaw Planet also has free virtual puzzles https://www.jigsawplanet.com/. Or try a physical puzzle.
Over the next three days, we encourage you to be active and move! Please consider completing 4 miles of walking, running, swimming, riding (horse or bike), dancing, or a mix of all. How you choose to be active is totally up to you! Be sure to show us how you're completing your 4 Miles for 4-H by uploading your photos in the Daily Report form. Special thanks to Virginia 4-H members, Elle Smith, Andrea Farag, Mindi Freed, and Alexa Mitchell for sharing how they plan to get in their 4 Miles for 4-H!
