While Governor Tonyn prepared for war, Peg, Alexander, and Sue prepared meals, cared for his clothing, and kept the Governor’s House running smoothly. Peg, Alexander, and Sue had served at the Governor’s House for ten years before Tonyn’s 1774 arrival.
Alexander, age 40, “a French baker”
Peg, age 37, seamstress
Robin, a young man, assisted in the kitchen
Sue (or Little Sue), age 27, a washerwoman and dairy maid
Governor Tonyn rented the workers from James Grant, the previous British governor. Tonyn’s wife scandalized St. Augustine’s residents with her cruel treatment of them. The Anglican minister wrote that “Alexander claims that Madam is the devil.” Finally, Alexander and Peg ran away from the Governor’s House. Robin’s and Sue’s fates are unknown.
