We believe that "accessible" also includes financial accessibility. Due to recent events impacting funding for equity-centered programs, we now rely entirely on donations to offer this transformative experience to students.
For student participating in-person: Student pay their own tuition, but our program covers all other expenses including lodging, food, transportation, staffing & equipment during the field course. These costs total roughly $2,000 per student.
For a student participating virtually: Cost to support a virtual student is roughly $500 and supports the streaming technology, the field technology staff and our virtual teaching staff.
Need based stipends: When we have funds available, we offer needs-based stipends of $1,000 for students with limited financial resources. Many students with disabilities have very limited financial resources, and need tuition assistance, or help purchasing field gear or specialty equipment unique to their disability. Virtual students with children often put this stipend towards child care so they can focus on the course. Many students tell us these stipends make all the difference in their ability to take the course!
You can make a donation to GeoSPACE through the UF Geological Sciences Dykes Endowment for Experiential learning. On the donation form, please Click on the radio button marked "I would like to provide additional information about this gift" and type "Geospace" in the comment box to direct your donation to this program specifically. On the donation form, there is information to give via phone, mail and planned gifts, of connect with someone who can assist with your donation. Thank you so much for your contribution!
Other ways to support: Our biggest expense is hotel lodging because accessible group housing extremely hard to find. We need a place with several accessible rooms, and a room to meet for our Mission Control/Astronaut briefings (a meeting room that can seat about 20 people is ideal), and air conditioning (we often have students with medical conditions that require air conditioning). If you know of a place in Flagstaff that fits the bill without breaking the bank, please reach out using the contact form.
What our students say:
"I made so many connections and felt so at ease with this group. This was a true safe space where I felt like I could talk for real about my disability without judgement or having my guard up. Free from that added stress, I accomplished beyond what I thought was humanly possible in just two weeks. I was inspired by my successes AND by the successes of those around me."
"Now I know there's a place for me in geology!"
