Support Us!

We believe that "accessible" also includes financial accessibility. For the past 3 years, all logistical costs have been covered by the program and not passed on to students, plus we have been able to provide a stipend to defray personal expenses (field gear, tuition, child care, etc.) thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation. We rely on grants and donations to be able to continue to provide this transformative opportunity to our students, and to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation.

How much does it cost to support a student?

For student participating in person: Student pay thier own tuition, but our program covers all other expenses which include travel to/from Arizona, and the full cost of the field course (lodging, food, and transportation) is roughly $2,000-$2,500 per student (depending on access needs). Additionally, we provide each student with a stipend of $1000. Total cost to fully support a student is $3,000 - $3,500.

For a student participating virtually: The stipend is just as important for our virtual participants to offset technology needs, child care or other expenses to fully participate. Cost to support a virtual student is $1,000 to cover their stipend.

Staffing and equipment: We have additional base costs for the course of roughly $20k per year including the field equipment and communication technology that enables our hybrid course format, and staffing (virtual and in-person instructors and graduate student teaching assistants).

What our students say:

"The GeoSPACE project greatly increased my confidence in my ability to succeed as a geologist. After having a rough time of it at college, participating in this course reminded me that I love learning about rocks, and that although I may be a minority in the geosciences, I shouldn't let that stop me from pursuing my passions."

"I made so many connections and felt so at ease with this group. This was a true safe space where I felt like I could talk for real about my disability without judgement or having my guard up. Free from that added stress, I accomplished beyond what I thought was humanly possible in just two weeks. I was inspired by my successes AND by the successes of those around me."
