Financial Literacy 101 Online Module
I thoroughly enjoyed developing the Canvas course for my Financial Literacy 101 module. Although I have used Canvas throughout my academic career, I have never had the chance to create a course using It. I have been a TA at the University of Florida and have had the opportunity to interact with the instructors' views, but not to the extent of developing a Canvas shell.
I have experienced well-designed and poorly designed Canvas courses throughout my academic endeavors. Therefore, I had a vision of the layout and structure of this course before even learning how to work the design within Canvas. I started designing my home page with Canva to create a unique and colorful welcome for the course, complete with buttons that allow easy navigation throughout the course. I then uploaded the welcome banner and course content buttons, which I later hyperlinked to the content in Canvas.
Next, I began creating PowerPoint lecture slides for each course topic: saving, budgeting and balancing, investing, and credit. After developing each PowerPoint presentation, I recorded myself lecturing, uploaded the video to YouTube, and embedded it in Canvas. I uploaded the slides so students could follow along or revisit them anytime. I also began developing the instructional activities that the students would complete. I chose discussion boards and worksheets created with Word because they most effectively reinforce the skills taught. I then began making the quizzes within Canvas for each topic. These quizzes are relatively short and are multiple-choice and true/false. Last but not least, I created the final exam within Canvas using a variety of multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions.
