City of Macclenny
Sustainable Tree Planting Initiative
Project Introduction
In this short video, we explain the project in more detail.

Project Mission
The city's tree planting project is aimed at replacing invasive tree species to increase biodiversity, improve air and water quality, and foster a healthier and more sustainable environment in the most urban area of our community.
Plan of Action
Tree Removal
Remove the Bradford Pear trees located within city right-of-way streets.
Why? The Bradford Pear or Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) is predicted to be invasive with a high invasion risk as evaluated by the University of Florida/IFAS Assessment of Non-native Plants and is not recommended (https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu/assessments/pyrus-calleryana/).
Furthermore, the lack of species diversity within the city limits puts the many benefits of urban forests at risk.
Tree Planting
Replace the Bradford Pear trees with a variety of Florida native trees.
New trees will be well-suited to the urban planting site and will enhance the environment for both wildlife and people.
To enhance biodiversity, no one species will make up more than 25% of the planting selection.
Areas of Hwy 90, Sixth Street, and Fifth Street have all been selected for the tree planting project.
