Cassandra Honson
Hello, and welcome! My name is Cassandra Honson, and I am the Youth Reading Programs Coordinator at The Legacy Center for Community Success. Our nonprofit focuses on empowering individuals through evidence-based learning and developmental strategies. In my role, I oversee programs like the Barton Reading and Spelling Program, which pairs trained volunteer tutors with students reading below grade level, many showing signs of dyslexia. I also collaborate with community partners to offer impactful literacy opportunities in afterschool and summer programs.
My passion for literacy reform began when I volunteered as a tutor and met a seventh grader who was reading below a second-grade level while living in her third foster home. Though often labeled a “troubled child,” her potential became clear once she received phonics-based, explicit, multisensory instruction. That experience showed me the profound difference targeted support can make and fueled my commitment to helping learners who face similar challenges.
I hold an Associate of Arts degree from Delta College and am a Susan Barton Certified Tutor with a Dyslexia Certificate from the Dyslexia Training Institute. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s in educational sciences through the University of Florida Online.
At the core of my work and studies is a belief that every student deserves equitable, effective education tailored to their unique abilities. Looking ahead, I am dedicated to strengthening community connections and expanding access to evidence-based literacy support, especially for students with dyslexia. I want to help ensure they receive the understanding, tools, and advocacy needed to thrive in school and beyond.
