Tomato

Florida produces nearly 30,000 acres of tomatoes. There are more than 7,500 varieties of tomatoes grown around the world, ranging in colors from red to purple! Because Florida is warm we typically grow tomatoes in a field, but in cooler climates tomatoes are often grown in greenhouses.

Fruit or Vegetable?

Although technically tomato are a fruit, we treat them like vegetables in our diet. It's okay, a lot of foods we eat grow a certain way but we don't necessarily eat them with foods in the same category! Remember how we said eggplants were a berry, but you wouldn't eat eggplants with your blueberries!

Processing Tomatoes

Some tomatoes are destined for paste, pasta sauce, and other products. These tomatoes don't have to be hand harvested, check out how we process them with machines!
